Short description:

The purpose of the Institute is developing of an accurate geological infrastructure for the country. Thus, the geological mapping fulfilled first the main role of the GIR, to which also agrogeology, geophysics, geochemistry, engineering geology etc., were successively added. All the main result were published in several journals (Dari de seama/Comptes Rendus, Anuarul IGR, Memorii etc.). Not only the map types and the content and design of the journals have diversified and enhanced with the time but also the range of tasks currently performed by the GIR has been enlarged, including remote sensing, environment monitoring, geothermics etc. The GIR served as the nerve center for geological research in Romania both by disseminating geological information and by rational development of different geological fields. Due to historical backgrounds, the GIR had the most complete analytical equipments as compared always existed. Nearly all the main fields developed in the GIR have produced outstanding ideas and concepts, such as the nappe structure of the South Carpathians (G. Murgeanu-Murgoci, 1910), the basic principles of geoelectric prospecting (Sabba Stefanescu, 1929), the "Catalysing Cracking" (L. Edeleanu, 1912). Worth of highlighting is the fact that the term and concept of "diapir folds" was created and introduced into geological literature by L. Mrazec, the first director of GIR (1927).
