Short description: | The Geological Institute is the biggest and the only complex scientific organization in the domain of geology in Bulgaria.Research in the principal geological sciences is performed, and namely, palaleontology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, petrology, mineralogy, geochemistry, geotectonics, hydrogeology, engineering geology, marine geology, regional geology, and recently, ecogeology. The theoretical value of the results of these studies comes from the key position of the country in the Eurasian geological structures (and the exclusive variety of composition and complexity of the geologic evolution). These features determine the wider international regional importance of the information on the geology of the Bulgarian territory. On the other hand, geological phenomena, some of them unique, represent a special theoretical interest for some of the geological sciences. The practical value of the results obtained comes from their importance as basic information for the evaluation and utilization of the mineral, energy and water resources, the determination of engineering-geological conditions and the geological risk for construction works on the territory of the country as well as other important characteristics of the environment. The scientific problematics has been developed both according to the modern trends of development of the geological sciences on international scale and to the national needs and priorities. |

Short description: | Communities and their infrastructure have always evolved within a pattern of local weather and climate variability to which they have adapted. This is a continuous process of meeting the nature challenges, which man can withstand and control only by acquisition of substantial knowledge and understanding of hydrological and meteorological phenomena and processes. Since the remote past the man, led by his instinct of self-preservation, had tried to predict the weather and related adverse phenomena, using his observations and vast experience. The way passes through the first network of observing stations in today's Germany in 17 century to the beginning of the scientifically justified weather forecasting in the second half of the 19 century, product of technical revolution. Bulgaria, as a part of European civilization, gives for more than 134 years its humble information and scientific contribution to the mastering and studying of the problems related to the climate change, weather and water resources. The tradition, the experience, the positive attitude to our work is that internal force, which maintains the idealism of many hydrologists, meteorologists, research scientists, observers, etc., to whom we owe a debt of gratitude. |

Short description: | BITNET-CCSS is a private company registered in Cluj, Romania, in the field of technological research & project management. The organization has been built by joining private capital and people & facilities from a research lab. at the Babes-Bolyai University and the Cluj branch at the Institute of Space Sciences. In 2002 BITNET founded a software unit that operates on the international market and in 2003 BITNET founded a third unit that provides satellite telecom services mainly for the Romanian market. But, everything started here. In their early stages, many of our hi-tech projects have been / are supported through research grants or contracts from several organizations such as the Romanian Ministry of Education & Research, Romanian Space Agency, Romanian Academy and European Commission. Products and services are developed on a commercial contract basis. Main clients: Romanian R&D organizations and public authorities, companies (some of them international). BITNET also acts as contractor for some research teams from Universities and Industry. In the case of large projects, BITNET is subcontracting with other companies or build an international project consortium. This was the way we extended our operations in several countries starting with year 2002. It is the best solution for keeping project costs very low and still high level expertise and flexibility. And it is why BITNET is in the same time a small Romanian company and a virtual multinational company. BUSINESS & RESEARCH AREA: BITNET is participating in several international research networks and programs, operating in the following business areas: space applications, environmental monitoring networks, information society, and innovation |

Short description: | The purpose of the Institute is developing of an accurate geological infrastructure for the country. Thus, the geological mapping fulfilled first the main role of the GIR, to which also agrogeology, geophysics, geochemistry, engineering geology etc., were successively added. All the main result were published in several journals (Dari de seama/Comptes Rendus, Anuarul IGR, Memorii etc.). Not only the map types and the content and design of the journals have diversified and enhanced with the time but also the range of tasks currently performed by the GIR has been enlarged, including remote sensing, environment monitoring, geothermics etc. The GIR served as the nerve center for geological research in Romania both by disseminating geological information and by rational development of different geological fields. Due to historical backgrounds, the GIR had the most complete analytical equipments as compared always existed. Nearly all the main fields developed in the GIR have produced outstanding ideas and concepts, such as the nappe structure of the South Carpathians (G. Murgeanu-Murgoci, 1910), the basic principles of geoelectric prospecting (Sabba Stefanescu, 1929), the "Catalysing Cracking" (L. Edeleanu, 1912). Worth of highlighting is the fact that the term and concept of "diapir folds" was created and introduced into geological literature by L. Mrazec, the first director of GIR (1927). Main domain of interests: -Regional Geology -Geophysics of Lithosphere -Paleontology -Mineral Resources -Mineralogy & Petrology |

Short description: | Activities of Laboratory of Mechatronic Properties of Magnetic Materials are focused on application of modern magnetic materials for sensors, actuators as well as power conversion devices. Research in this Laboratory are also connected with measurements of magnetic and electric quantities as well as solving of metrological problems. The main areas of scientific and technical expertise: 1. Development of magnetic sensors for measurement of magnetic, mechanical and electric quantities We have experience in development and calibration of magnetic field sensors (fluxgate sensors, hall sensors). We also developed mathematical models of such sensors. Our models as well as results of our experiments created “first in the word” possibility of determination of the simultaneous influence of the temperature and mechanical stress on the functional characteristics of fluxgate sensors. 2. Testing of the magnetic, magnetoelastic and magnetostrictive properties of modern magnetic materials for applications in the area of switching-mode power supplies, sensors and high-frequency transformers In cooperation with PENTALAB we developed unique measuring system for testing of magnetic and magnetoelastic properties of materials. We also developed innovative method of application of the uniform compressive stress to the ring shaped magnetic core. As a result we can determine not only the magnetic properties of materials, but also how these properties will vary under the influence of temperature, mechanical stress or other conditions of operation. These material’s characteristics are especially important in the case of reliable components of mechatronics devices, such as switching mode power supplies or power transformers. 3. Testing of residual magnetization of mechanical parts of engines In cooperation with WUZETEM-Warszawa we developed methodology and equipment for testing of residual magnetization of the parts of the engines. We also developed methods for demagnetization process of these mechanical parts. As a result residual magnetization of the parts was lower than 5 Gs (0,5 mT) – accordingly to the needs of car industry 4. Magnetoelastic sensors Our group developed the new kind of magnetoelastic stress and force sensors with the ring shaped sensing elements. Due to the application of amorphous magnetic alloys as well as ferrites as sensing cores, our sensors exhibit extremely high sensitivity, wide range of the operation temperature (up to 600 oC) as well as robustness and reliability. We also proposed unique method of heat treatment of the sensor’s core. As a result our sensors exhibit low magnetoelastic hysteresis and can be applied in the industry. Cooperation with industry During last few years we cooperated with leading Polish and world-wide producers of electronic and mechanical devices. The most important of them are: · WUZETEM – Warszawa, Poland Demagnetization process of mechanical parts of engines · Magnetics – Buttler, USA Testing of magnetoelastic properties of magnetic cores for switching mode power supplies · FERYSTER – Iłowa, Poland Testing of magnetic properties of sintered materials · POLFER – Warszawa, Poland Testing of magnetic, magnetoelastic and magnetostrictive properties of power ferrites · EPCOS – Germany Testing mechatronic properties of newly developed ferrites We are also cooperating with foreign research groups, mainly at the Institute of Physics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Physics of Slovak Academy of Sciences, SYMACON GmbH and Slovak University of Technology. We have also long-term cooperation with the Industrial Research Institute for Automation and Measurements in Warsaw. |

Short description: | Proposals to the STAPT program on problems of aeronautics 1 Project title: Especially precise pressure sensors. 2. Project purpose: certification and preparation of series production of pressure sensors with an accuracy class 0,01. 3. Assigning of offered sensors of pressure: 1) precise measurement of pressure; 2) usage in autothrottle systems of pressure onboard a plane; 3) measurement of an altitude, horizontal and vertical speeds of a plane, 4) precise measurement of pressure in systems of the launcher. The note: The development was conducted on requirement specifications of the firm «Antonov» (aircraft construction) and designer bureau «Yuzhnoye» («Southern») (rocket engineering). 4. Matching with the best world analogues 4.1. Our reachings Executing prior activities on creation of modern precise sensors of pressure, including project STCU ą1690, 2000-2002, financed by European Union, USA and Canada, the creative collective has achieved high outcomes, namely: The created sensors of pressure of a capacitive type with main error 0,01 % (accuracy class 0,01). Let's underline following basic characteristics of offered pressure sensors: 1) A broad band of operation temperatures (-30- + 200 0Ń), 2) The insignificant additional temperature error (0,01-0,03 % at change of temperature Ň on 100 deg), 3) Absence of the thermocycle hysteresis within the limits of 0,01 % at change Ň on 100 deg, 4) Absence of effects of aging (zero drift and change of declination of a performance characteristic) at operation of tens thermocycles in the interval of temperatures 20-120 °Ń. Other characteristics of offered sensors are typical. The expected price of a production model $ 900. The separate engineering solutions provide still smaller main error (0,002 %); they are base for creation of portable reference pressure gauges of the accuracy class 0,002. 4.2. Analogues The best world analogues (corporation «Fischer- Rosemount», Germany; "«Druck», USA; "«Fuji», Japan) have the accuracy class in 10 times worse (0,1), the price in ~2 times higher (~ $ 2000). Besides they have a large additional temperature error (~1 % at change of temperature on 100 deg). 5. Technology The basic performances, listed in item 4.1, of offered pressure sensors demonstrate exclusive parameters of reliability and stability. Such high parameters managed to be achieved for the score: 1) successful selection of the material for diaphragms and their successful design fulfilment (know-how); 2) connection of details, responsible for accuracy, and structural assemblies (metal - metal, metal - ceramics) with the help of vitreous composite materials and high-temperature (850 °Ń) vacuum connection of such details and units by silver solders; 3) usage of the priority schemes of auto calibration of an initial signal. 6. Project duration: 15-20 months. 7. Quantity of the held specialists: 15. 8. Approximate cost of the project: 120 000 EURO. |

Short description: | 1. The scientists at IMSAR have a substantial fundamental and experimental background in optical spectroscopy and specific experience in detection and identification of chemical and biological agents by means of time- and phase-resolved spectroscopy using both laboratory equipment and proprietary portable devices. This experience is applicable in monitoring the Earth surface from space. 2. IMSAR has experience in solid-state light sources (especially in physics, technology, and applications of light emitting diodes (LED) and laser diodes), color mixing, physical and psychological aspects of color perception, phototherapy. An increasing number of students is involved in this research and applications at IMSAR, so human recourses necessary for extension of these activities are being intensively created. Our experience on specific topics is related or may be extended to space applications. We are working on a large high-tech program on plant cultivation under LED-based illumination. This multidisciplinary program is supported by the Lithuanian Science and Studies Foundation and is carried out in collaboration with the Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture and the Institute of Botany. The project is based on optimization of lighting spectrum for vegetable growth and development of energy-efficient light sources for production of healthy plants for food. Monitoring of the plant growth and its feedback to the lighting control, which are under development, might find space applications. Study of plant growth under LED-based lighting in conditions of reduced gravity, which is carried out in the framework of the program at the Institute of Botany, is straightforwardly directed to space applications.Combination of our experience in development and fabrication of light sources with variable and digitally controlled spectrum and in psychological aspects of color perception may find applications in development of energy-efficient and human-friendly lighting in spacecrafts. For astronauts living and working in limited rooms of a spacecraft the environmental impacts are very important psychological factors. Lighting is one of the most important impacts. Variable LED-based lighting spectrum can be optimized for work and leisure time, in accordance with stresses, personal peculiarities or health conditions.Development of specific or multipurpose LED-based light sources for space applications is feasible on the basis of scientific and technological experience and qualified human recourses available at IMSAR. |

The Vega mission rises above the others since it brought the greatest success to our Space Research Group (our development included power supplies for 2 particle detectors, for the on-board computer as well as for the telemetry data collector and TV-system). The reliability of the power systems built in projects P3A, B and C is proven by 13 years of error free operation. By the mid-nineties the on-board computer was already out of order and all the batteries were down too, but the electronics of the power system still operated properly. On sunny sections of the orbit the on-board transponders started up if the satellite and its antennas occasionally turned into the right position. Unfortunately it was no more possible to position the satellite. Our latest project: the ROSETTA mission – project ROLAND Our latest project named ROLAND (abbreviation for ROsetta LANDer) has almost ended, currently it is in the integration phase and thus the development and design of the power management circuitry has already been completed. ROSETTA is a spacecraft intended to carry out investigations on a comet that is supposed to be in the same age as the Earth. The origin and formation of our planet is expected to be revealed this way. |

The results were obtained in the extremely difficult conditions of an insufficient financing and of the continuous decrease of the number of researchers (the older researchers leave the Institute by retiring and the young ones, trained in difficult circumstances, emigrate). Short description: | The University of Ljubljana is an institution with a very rich tradition. With its more than 56,000 undergraduate and post-graduate students, it ranks among the biggest universities in the world scale. A total of 22 faculties, 3 academies of art and 1 university college employ approx. 3500 teaching and research staff, assisted by nearly 900 technical and administrative staff. The University of Ljubljana was established in 1919 on the foundations of a long- established pedagogical tradition. For almost half a century it remained the only Slovenian university until it was joined, about 20 years ago, by the University of Maribor and, last year, by the University of Primorska on the coast of Slovenia. The university has its seat in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Ljubljana is a relatively large central European city with approx. 300,000 inhabitants. Nearly one tenth of its inhabitants are students, which gives Ljubljana a young and lively character. The university was founded in the centre of Ljubljana where the central university building and the majority of its faculties are located. Later on, some new, modern buildings were constructed in the suburbs of the city. The University of Ljubljana is famous for the quality of its study courses both in the humanities, and in scientific and technological fields, as well as in medicine, dentistry and veterinary science. On a domestic and international level, the study courses run at the University of Ljubljana and its projects follow the latest world discoveries and trends in the field of art, science and technology, to which the contribution of numerous Slovenian professors and researchers is of great importance. |

Short description: | Fotona was founded in 1964, only four years after the invention of the laser. With over 15,000 systems installed worldwide, Fotona has dedicated itself to becoming one of the leading manufacturers of lasers and laser-based solutions for medicine, communications, defence and industrial material processing. IN-HOUSE TECHNOLOGY If lasers are the heart of our instruments, then the fine mechanical parts are their bones, the optics their eyes and electronics their brain. Fotona's speed in innovation and quality in manufacturing are based on our strategy to develop and manufacture all critical components by ourselves. DEDICATION TO PRECISION, RELIABILITY AND ENDURANCE Dedication to strict compliance with the most stringent military standards has pervaded our thinking also in all other areas. All our systems, regardless of their application, are submitted to strict military temperature and vibrations tests. Consequently, our customers know that we produce quality systems. CERTIFIED QUALITY Our quality assurance system is certified according to ISO 9001:2000, ISO 13485:1996, EN 46001, MDD 93/42 Annex II.3, and complies with the United States GMP standards. All medical products comply with the requirements of the EU Medical Devices Directive, while the industrial products comply with the requirements of the EU Low Voltage Directive. Individual specific products are certified and approved in the countries (for example, in the United States by the FDA) where they are used. |

Short description: | Since its foundation, the Institute of Geodynamics "Sabba S. Stefanescu" of the Romanian Academy focused its interest on fundamental research imposed by the tasks implied by the Priority Program of the Romanian Academy, "Complex geophysical research in geodynamically active areas concerning especially the Vrancea seismogenic area", regarding particularly: -the study of space-time variations of some parameters causally linked to the cumulating of stresses responsible for earthquakes occurrence; -crustal deformations monitoring (relative displacement of tectonic blocks); -tectonic hazard studies; -the monitoring of space-time variations of the gravitational, geomagnetic, geoelectric fields and of earth crust tilts; -the creation and permanent maintaining at an international level of a mobile specialized equipment for complex studies in geodinamically active areas (seismoactive areas, landslides, underground cavities collapses, areas that became geodynamically active because of anthropic activity); -modeling of the thermo-mechanical evolution of the lithosphere; -non-linear analysis of geodynamic systems. At present, the Institute has a network of observatories and observation points, structured in profiles and geodynamics polygons, all having as a main purpose a better knowledge of phenomena leading to stress cumulating/ triggering in geodynamically active areas, with a special concern for the geodynamically active area of the Romanian Carpathians bend - the Vrancea seismogenic area, the network being concentrated in three geodynamics polygons: the Caldarusani-Tulnici Geodynamics Polygon, the Craciunesti-Deva, Sarmizegetusa Regia, Pades-Gorj Geodynamics Polygon and the Danube Delta - Mangalia Geodynamics Polygon (Fig. 5). Among these polygons, a special place is occupied by the Caldarusani-Tulnici Geodynamics Polygon (Fig. 6) which includes - besides the laboratories for equipment gauging and aging, arranged in the framework of the Caldarusani Geodynamics Observatory, in the basement of the group of buildings that constitute the headquarters of the IG"SSS"AR (Fig. 7) and in the basement of the headquarters of the Romanian Academy - several micropolygons consisting of over 200 observation points, that allow the performing of repeated measurements, usually at 6 months up to 5 years intervals, and of underground laboratories, which allow data acquisition - within the limits of the possible, without interruption - corresponding to variations in the crust tilt and in the gravity, the magnetic and the electric fields. The location of the Vrancea Natural Laboratory for Geodynamics Among these micropolygons, the most important one - the Micropolygon I Tulnici - is situated in the Vrancea geodynamically active area (Fig. 9) on both sides of the contact on which the hypocenters of the Vrancea seismogenic area are situated, till a depth that may exceptionally exceed 180 km. The Craciunesti-Deva, Sarmizegetusa-Regia, Pades-Gorj Geodynamic Polygon is constituted, in its northern part, of a set of underground observatories including laboratories situated at depths exceeding sometimes 500 m below the soil surface, where the sensors are located far from any influences of anthropic activities and at a distance of about 300 km of the Vrancea geodynamically active area; these laboratories, which allow recordings that are subject only to low perturbation by parasite noises, have the role to provide a valuable reference information. The Danube Delta - Constanta Polygon is dedicated to the monitoring of actual phenomena of sedimentation / erosion dynamics, specific to the river water / marine water / crust contact. |

Short description: | SRC PAS Overview Space Research Centre of Polish Academy of Sciences is the only institution in Poland whose activity is fully devoted to space research and its applications in geosciences and technology. Since 1977 the SRC has been conducting pure and applied studies based on space experiments in the field of space physics and Solar System research, and physical and geodesic studies of planets and the Earth. Recent research and development achievements of the Space Research Centre can be divided into two parts: · studies of the ionosphere and magnetosphere of the Earth, the Sun, the heliosphere, interplanetary space; and investigation of planets and their satellites, small bodies of the Solar System, · the Earth treated on one hand as a planet, and on the other hand as an object of geodesic research and remote sensing studies. Almost whole scientific and technological activity of the SRC is carried out in a broad international cooperation. SRC develops and manufactures space-qualified hardware. For the last years the space instruments made in the institute have visited or are going to visit the Earth’s orbit and deeper space in the frame of satellite projects and missions: APEX, CORONAS I, Interball–2, CASSINI/HUYGENS, PRIRODA/MIR, CLUSTERS, CORONAS-F, INTEGRAL, ROSETTA, MARS EXPRESS and others. GNSS-related activities The Space Research Centre PAS has been involved in the research of GPS during the last 15 years. SRC has done the first international GPS campaign in Poland in 1989 and in 1992 the EUREF-POL geodetic network has been measured by GPS technique in co-operation with the International Association of Geodesy Commission "European Reference Frame". This network is actually accepted as a fundamental geodetic reference frame for surveying and mapping in Poland. Other projects have been carried out: Ř Development of the DGPS master station; Ř Development of the system combing the GPS and inertial sensors; Ř Running of the GPS mobile laboratory; Ř Development of the GPS time transfer receiver; Ř Establishment and maintenance of the GPS permanent station in Borowiec; Ř Establishing the GPS reference station for the sea level monitoring; Ř Realisation of the active stations network in Silesia region. The Regional Warning Centre for Ionosphere is operating in SRC producing ionosphere models and radio-wave propagation predictions. In September 2004 a RIMS station – the only one in Central-Eastern Europe and one of 34 of the world’s monitoring stations of satellite navigation augmentation system EGNOS – was opened in SRC in Warsaw. Organisational potential SRC PAS is an institution with experience in organisation of international events. Inter alia, it was the executive organiser of the 6th European Meeting of Civil GPS Interface Committee – International Information Subcommittee in 1997 and the 33rd COSPAR Scientific Assembly in 2000. In 2002 the Institute assisted in the process of preparing and ratification of the new Agreement with the European Space Agency as well as it fostered the work of an Interministerial Consultative Group for Space to the Prime Minister (which is chaired by the director of SRC). Furthermore, the SRC is actively involved in a range of educational actions and in promotion of space science. Department of Planetary Geodesy Since 1977 the Department of Planetary Geodesy has been a part of Space Research Centre PAS. Its scientists deal with: - Earth rotation studies - Crustal movements - Earth gravitational field, geoid - Geodetic reference system - Time transmission - Tidal processes in the oceans, investigation of sea level - Satellite navigation and location The facilities of the Department are located in different regions of Poland. They comprise: - Satellite Laser Ranging System (ILRS) in Borowiec - Permanent GPS station (IGS, EUREF) in Borowiec - Time laboratory in Borowiec - Geodymamic laboratory in Książ - GPS station for sea level measurementsdo badań poziomu morza (ESEAS) in Władysławowo - EGNOS RIMS station in Warsaw - Gravimetric station in Warsaw - GPS station in Warsaw The staff of the Department of Planetary Geodesy offers necessary support to the activities of Galileo Information Point – Poland, which is dealing with the issues concerning satellite navigation and Galileo system in particular (http://galileo.kosmos.gov.pl).
