RTU is the oldest and at present the second largest institution of higher education in Latvia, offering advanced study program in Engineering, Technology, Chemistry, Architecture and Business Management.
The history of RTU dates back to the foundation of the Riga Polytechnic in 1862 – a private institution supported by municipal and estate bodies of Baltic Provinces. In 1896 Riga Polytechnic was recognised to become the Riga Polytechnics Institute – the official establishment of higher education in Czarist Russia, and tuition was conducted in Russian and German. In 1919 the Latvian Higher School was established on the bases of the former Riga Polytechnics Institute. In 1922 this institution was renamed as University of Latvia. In 1958 the Riga Polytechnic Institute was re-established to unite all engineering faculties of the University of Latvia. In 1990 the institute got its present name. The change of the name was not a more formality but the result of the long-term reorganisation of all study programs with the aim to qualify for the status of a high-standard European university. At present the number of students in different engineering majors has reached the highest previous level – 14850. Currently the RTU comprises of 8 faculties plus the 6 independent units.
